UPC’s Miria Obote storms Mulago HospitalMonday, 8th March, 2010[image: E-mail article] E-mail article [image: Print article] Print article [image: Miria Obote leads the Inter- Party Cooperation women in the peace march]

Miria Obote leads the Inter- Party Cooperation women in the peace march

*By Juliet Waiswa and Timothy Kasura*

POLICE yesterday deployed at Mulago Hospital as women activists belonging to the Inter-Party Cooperation (IPC) marched to the hospital and donated items to the maternity wards.

Over 100 women led by the Uganda Peoples Congress party president, Miria Kalule Obote, forced their way into the hospital. The hospital authorities had earlier agreed to let in 30 of the women, but were shocked to see a bigger group marching into the hospital. Police officers were then deployed in the wards.

The authorities also barred journalists from entering the hospital even after pleas from FDC’s spokesman Wafula Oguttu.

The executive director of Mulago Hospital, Dr. Edward Ddumba, told the women that the initial agreement was to grant access to 30 women into the hospital without the press.

He observed that it was unfair for the women to change the terms of the agreement and expect the hospital administration to cooperate.

The activists carried placards with messages like “high infant mortality rates, we need change.” They also chanted slogans praising the IPC and criticising the Government.

Ingrid Turinawe, the chairperson of IPC Women for Peace, said the situation at the hospital was bad and that is why the journalists were barred from entering the premises.

Earlier while addressing the press at Christ the King church, Miria Obote said they had not celebrated Women’s Day because the Government had failed to bring the change which it promised 24 years ago.

She added that there was no reason to celebrate the day when thousands of women died in government hospitals.

This will be interesting – US Govt begins largest IT consolidation in History – wonder how well this is going to work out

March 2nd, 2010 No comments

Given the experience of some of the govt agencies and their big IT projects that went totally off the tracks, this will end up being a huge mess unless someone in charge has the experience and the data to control it. I for one do not see anyone on the horizon who has that experience to keep this one going right. I shudder to think of what this whole thing will cost and just what a disaster it will be.

WHY MAO NEEDS TO WORK WIZ BESIGYE TO SAVE UGANDA?

February 25th, 2010 5 comments

After spending too much time in Kampala, Mao needed to reconnect with the masses in the north. I thought his resignation from parliament and move to gulu was a good way to reconnect/connect to the grassroots. It was also time for him to work on actually bringing something measurable to DP i.e the northern vote rather than simply using DP as a vehicle for his own aspirations.

Having reconnected with the masses in Gulu, he has since made some faux pas. In suggesting secession to a “Nile republic” with Southern Sudan, appearing to get too close to Kony and allowing unsecured USB data suggesting him canoodling too closely with rebels to fall into security hands his own motives and principles started to be questioned.

At the end of the day, Mao has got to demonstrate comittment to Uganda and not just northern Uganda. In thinking too local he risks being seen as a local actor and alienating other voters in Uganda specifically those who still harbour negative memories of northern rule!

Mao now needs to step out of Gulu and recast himself as a Ugandan president -not a Gulu chairman or Luo president. As a Luo president, he would only be fit to preside over the fictitious Nile republic -that is assuming the southern sudanese would hand him the spoils they fought and died for!

As a Ugandan president, he has got to appeal to more than northerners. To more than anti Museveni and anti movement sentiments. To more than catholic sentiments.

Like Obama who cast himself as an American president rather than a black president, he needs to be seen as a Ugandan president and not just as a northern president or a Luo president.

There is a little known lesson in Mao’s past. In the run for guild president at Makerere university, Mao had a formidable opponent in Mayombo who himself was a very good orator. It appeared that Mayombo was going to win the election until the final day -before the election. At the general assembly Mayombo made a very powerful show of force! His supporters were everywhere. But they made one mistake -instead of speaking English, his supporters spoke Runyakitara. Everywhere they shouted and chanted in a local or regional dialect/dialects while hi -fiving each other. Many students from other regions walked away in disgust at this very sectarian display!

Mayombo lost the election the next day to Mao -and the main reason for this was a swing vote of mainly Baganda voters who while previously campaigned for and planned to vote for Mayombo, were peeved off by the very sectarian show of force by Mayombo’s supporters. Am sure Mayombo had not planned or foreseen this and neither had his strategists.

I hope Mao learnt the lesson from his victory many years ago!

Congratulations to Mao

NATIONAL IRC suspends work in Karamoja after attack on workers SHARE BOOKMARK PRINT EMAIL RATING By Steven Ariong (email the author ) Posted Monday, February 15 2010 at 15:10

According to sources, all staff working in the Karamoja region have also been advised against using the organisation’s vehicles but instead use public means until security threats are dealt with.

*Nakapiripirit*

The International Rescue Committee (IRC), an aid organisation working in the remote Karamoja region, north east Uganda, has suspended work following a Friday attack on its employees that left three dead and a U.S consultant in critical condition.

Peter Kinene, a driver with the IRC, Rucino Asio, the Nakapiripirit District Internal Auditor and an unidentified police officer, who was guarding the team, were shot at and died on the spot when Pokot warriors ambushed the organisation’s vehicles at Nabilatuk, in the north-eastern Uganda.

According to sources, all staff working in the Karamoja region have also been advised against using the organisation’s vehicles but instead use public means until security threats are dealt with.

The Resident District Commissioner for Nakapiripirit, Andrew Napaja confirmed the IRC arrangement and said it’s true that field work had been suspended because of the Friday incident.

One of the aid workers who spoke to Daily Monitor but preferred anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press said they had been instructed not to carry out any field work until further notice.

“All our colleagues working with IRC in Nakapiripirit, Kotido, Kaabong and Moroto have been told to remain at the organization’s premises. They don’t allow us now to move out unless you want to go home,” he said.

The IRC began working in Uganda in 1998 in response to the widespread devastation wrought by the Lord’s Resistance Army and is focused on helping rebuild people’s lives.
