Katumba and Sanyu showing their marriage certificate at the reception in Seeta on Saturday

*By John Semakula and Henry Nsubuga*

A church wedding of a prominent born-again pastor in Mukono district ended prematurely on Saturday after a woman turned up with photos showing that she was married to the groom.

Grace Nakasi, 32, stunned the congregation when she walked to the altar and handed to the presiding minister what she described as photos of her wedding to Pastor Fred Katumba.

Katumba heads Gospel Life Worship Centre Church in Jjoggo in Goma sub-county. Pastor Samuel Lwandasa was presiding over the ceremony, which should have taken place at Mt. Lebanon Church in Mukono Town Council.

Pastor Katumba, 36, was wedding Robinah Sanyu, 26. The lovebirds were about to arrive at the church to exchange marital vows at the ceremony, slated for the afternoon, when Nakasi showed up.

Nakasi, a resident of Nalukolongo in Kampala, looked weary. She entered the Church at about 3:00pm during the introductory prayers as the congregation waited for the lovers to arrive.

She told Pastor Lwandasa and the congregation that she was married to Katumba in 1994 and they have three children. “We got married in a born-again church in Kasawo sub-county in Mukono district. Pastor Apollo Kabaale presided over the wedding,” she said.

The woman named their children as John Sekanjako, 13, Joanita Namugerwa, 11, and Jane Nantongo, 9.

Nakasi said she separated with Katumba in 2005 because he had an affair with another girl in his church. “It was not a divorce. He is still my husband and I ask you to cancel the wedding,” Nakasi told a puzzled Lwandasa.

In the meantime, murmuring filled the church. Pastor Lwandasa excused himself, walked out of the Church and made a call on his mobile phone. He re-appeared in the Church and announced the wedding had been cancelled.

The puzzled congregation walked out of the Church, stood in small groups discussing the issue and then went away.

In an interview with The New Vision, Lwandasa said he contacted the bride and the groom and informed them of the development and they agreed to cancel the wedding. “I could not go on with the wedding after receiving information that one of the two parties to wed was committed to someone else,” he said.

Before going to the Church, Nakasi first went to Mukono Police Station and reported the matter.

“I was given an introduction letter at the Police which I went with to the Church and it made my work easy because when I presented it, everyone listened to me,” she said.

Mukono district Police commander Aliphonsi Musoni confirmed Nakasi had been cleared at the station.

Meanwhile, the bride and the groom appeared at the reception at Seeta Boarding Primary School in their wedding gowns and a marriage certificate, to the delight of enthusiastic relatives and friends.

The certificate showed they were married at New Life Christ Ministries in Kampala, presided over by the Rev. Rogers Tashobya.

Exactly two years ago, on April 26, 2008, a couple who were to exchange marriage vows at All Saints Church, were sent away after the man’s jilted lover blocked the wedding through a court order. Bosco Gitta Kasirye was set to wed Jane Nakubulwa but the ceremony was blocked by Ruth Namirembe.

in Uganda today we need this kind of democracy, lets witness respective party candidates have open debates ,as its done else were in the world New Poll Puts Labour Third Behind Lib Dems

A new YouGov poll for The Sun has put Labour in third place – behind the Liberal Democrats – for the first time in the General Election campaign. Skip related content Related photos / videos New Poll Puts Labour Third Behind Lib Dems Play video

Have your say: Labour Party

It comes on the heels of Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg’s winning performance in the first televised leaders’ debate. The poll puts the Conservatives in the lead on 33% (down four), the Liberal Democrats on 30% (up eight) and Labour on 28 (down three). Professor Michael Thrasher has translated the figures into what the House of Commons may look like based on this poll. The Conservatives would have 244 seats (up 34), Lib Dems would have 103 (up 41), Labour would have 271 (down 78) and the remaining 32 seats would be taken by other parties. Labour would still be the largest party with 271 seats despite being third in the popular vote, because of the distribution of votes in 2005 and the application of uniform swing, he told Sky News. “The Lib Dems could be the kingmakers,” he said, with the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats able to call a coalition. Sky’s chief political correspondent Jon Craig said: “It’s great news for the Liberal Democrats and terrible news for Mr Cameron.” The Tory leader will be under pressure now having argued so hard for the debate in the first place, he explained. “The reason it’s so bad for the Toriesis because it continues the slump in the Tory lead over the last few months. “Alarm bells will be ringing in Tory headquarters. “The pressure is on David Cameronto raise his game.” It indicates that the first televised leaders’ debate in British General Election history may have blown the race for Number 10 wide open. Labour has not been forced into third place in national polls of this kind since the days of the SDP/Liberal Alliance in the 1980s. Polling evidence suggests the swing to the Liberal Democrats is even stronger among the 10 million voters who tuned in to watch Thursday’s debate. An ITV/ComRes survey found that, of a sample of 4,000 viewers who watched the broadcast, some 35% said they would vote Lib Dem, against 36% for the Tories and 24% for Labour. And Mr Clegg was picked as the winner of the debate in four separate instant surveys carried out immediately after it concluded, racking up support as high as 61% in one poll. The Lib Dems’ dramatic eight-point leap in the latest poll means the spotlight will be firmly on Mr Clegg when he squares up again with Gordon Brown and David Cameron for next Thursday’s debate

TOWADS ISSUES PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR/SSEMALULU

Ssemalulu Mr.

We must shifted our attention away from less important debates, sijui wakina…ponds, anti hills, Filipino love affairs and whatever, and concentrate on issues that matter for the electorate. Corruption, bad roads, disfunctional hospitals, cronyism, land, HIV, Police brutality, democracy, disfunctional schools, etc….etc. You can also chip in the “Katayimbwa people if you like”. Instead, I see a lot of self glorification here too, me this…me that, me know, me know, know, know…… as if we want to know. Peleka uko utumbavu yako wewe jangiri kichwa maji, sura mbaya, nyama ya punda.

The elections are approaching, therefore every minute counts, and must not be wasted. We’ve had enough time to play around a little, and argue sometimes aimlessly really, but that was last year.

I wonder whether you have educated your self about the intentions of some members here. They desire to keep some of you engaged in some very important discussions, but none the less inappropriate and misplaced at this moment in time. These fellows are not stupid, for they know what they are doing.

What it is….”Keep them talking about cultural issues, history, bacteria, sujui huts and fire ants, sexual habits of ensekere” etc….., and by the time they wake up, it is too late to mobilise. And then what? NRM oyeeeeeeeeeee!!!

Drope them like a rotten cabbage.

Mulindwa: You do not qualify to discuss social policy issues.

Interesting

So now I am too stupid to understand that by insuring the 32 million you can easily annoy the about 200 million that will be forced to pay for the 32 millions. Great !!!!!!

Sorry Mulindwa

But I do not think that you are qualified to talk or discuss economic issues and even welfare.

You rely on blame culture, hetred and the straw man fallacy to attack Obama. To make matters worse, you have even chosen to persuade the readers by appealing to their emotions through using language that generates sympathy when you mention the death of your daughter which to me cannot qualify as a point of reference to deny 32 million American access to Healthcare.

I did the social policy module at University and I know so much about the welfare state. I also know very well about the issues of social inequality, social exclussion, poverty and stratification.

I’m well informed about these issues and to be honest with you, I beg you to leave this debate because by the look of it, you do not qualify to debate about it at a professional level. I think you can excel on issues like Joseph Kony, UPC, Lakwena, Luwero triangle and Olala Otunnu.

But these professional issues are more complex than you may think. Social policy development is dependent upon so many factors and worst of all, some of them are international.

Discussing social policy does not require committing the straw man fallacy where you simply ignore Obama’s actual position and instead substitute it with a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented versions of your own creation.

This kind of debate requires you to be well equiped with skills in socialogy, social policy, economics , maths etc.

Emotive language, straw-man fallacy and red herring have no place in this kind of debate

Socrates worked to undermine the collective notion of “might makes right”. Socrates believed the best way for people to live was to focus on self-development rather than the pursuit of material wealth. He always invited others to try to concentrate more on friendships and a sense of true community, for Socrates felt this was the best way for people to grow together as a populace.

NEW POLICIANS SHOULD DISCUSS ISSUES NOT MUSEVENI!

Martin Egwea, The issue of calling for probes of who killed who at this time is derailing. Yes we should know and we should, but now our problems are not merely who should a shame who. it is life, our childrens’ welbeing, economy, social services. Let them tell how these will change. We know all have taints, all of them. Otunnu supporting LRA murders and now disappointed they have been defeated, and if they appear at the Heague, his name may come up, so he has a strategy just to confuse. Everyone knows waht is Junta did and he knows it. Mao had better stay out of talking non issues now if he plans to get a winning. He may not have been too involved with the LRA but he obviously expected the LRA to be a force and then he would become a spokesperson of sorts and accend to power. That is ok, it was his strategy. we should have had these probes in 1988 when all was fresh. It could still be done but not a main issue at the moment. We dont want to be derailed. pk
